Thought you all might enjoy this giant list of generic blog comments and find it useful.

Someone apparently missed a setting on their WordPress comment spam tool and rather than posting a single comment line, they posted an entire list of about 100 generic comments here at the Electron Plumber.  Even better, they didn’t even leave a backlink in the URL field!

Most of the time these are filtered out by the AWESOME captcha powered comment spam plugin I have installed that requires a human to type out a captcha if there is a link in the comment or certain bad words, like viagra, porn, plumbers, electricians, etc.  Yeah, I get a lot of home service spam comments because of the site name.

So for the most part, the only spam comments I ever see are the ones that have a human spammer behind them or had a glitch that doesn’t include a link.  And the great thing is, anyone posting a real comment that somehow gets caught can still bypass the filter simply by filling in the captcha phrase.

So far the plugin has blocked and rejected 24143 spam comments!  Even if it only takes 10 seconds to reject each spam message, that’s 24143 seconds or over 6 hours of my life saved.  Love it!

The thought people have here is to auto blast out generic comments to a giant list of WordPress pages in the hope that some are unmoderated and others are moderated by poor souls who can’t recognize comment spam.   Include a link and you have instant low value backlinks!  Put like anything else, post enough of them and they start to add up eventually.

I don’t go for such shenanigans myself but I do manual blog commenting when I’m in the mood.  I like to actually join the discussion when I do, but if you are feeling lazy maybe you can use one of these bad boys below.  Or maybe not, most of them have terrible grammar.  At least they’re good for a laugh.

Stop linking to your Category pages, like I said it’s a waste of your link power.  Many of your posts have links to your sexy shoes category page, but driving people to a category page is not a good way of targeting.  Make a single “Shopping for Sexy Shoes” post, link to that instead, and spend time making it the perfect post on how to shop for sexy shoes.

Lose that “Stumble for WP” plugin, replace it with a Related Posts plugin like WordPress Related Posts that will let your link juice flow between your posts more and draw people to other posts.

Remove a bunch of the link junk you have on your sidebars (that sweepstakes link, the wikio link, the translator, the grab our button) and replace them with a “Most Popular Posts” list like I have here and put your 5 or 10 big money posts on the list.  It lets every page of your site drive your “link juice” to those posts for the search engines to see.

Now for the posts.  Take your Ruffle Peep Toe Pumps as an example.  I just picked a recent post as an example:

• Your image has no link!  Clicking on the link there should take you to that shoe on Endless or Zappos.
• Put links in the text to some shoe like those through an affiliate link!  See my article on Amazon link targeting for more details.  It’s relevant for non Amazon links too.  Stuff like “And then I found these awesome ruffle peep toe pumps for this amazing party I went to last Friday“  By linking that entire statement, it might get people who are interested in the show as well as people who might think it’s a link about the party.  GET THEM TO CLICK THROUGH, even if you have to be sneaky.  But it only works if they get to your site in a shopping mood to start with.
• Improve your call to action!  At the bottom you put a link you have a “Shop At Endless.com for shoes!”  replace that with “Check out these amazing heels I found on closeout sale before they sell out!” and link to a sale page or clearance page at Endless.  Check out my article on link targeting for more details.

Remember, the key is to get people who are interested in buying shoes to your site by keyword targeting, then getting them to click on an affiliate link however you can.  Tempt them, tease them, whatever it takes.

From my black and white high heel suggestion above, create a new post with maybe 2 or 3 shoes, small images that link to affiliate pages for those shoes coupled with links that entice people to click on them.  Make sure you use that keyword in various forms in the article without over doing it, something like

“I found the best black and white high heels the other day while shopping for a special date with my guy.  They didn’t go with the pink outfit I was planning, but then I found this amazing black and white dress that went perfect with these high heels.  Normally I like my heels to be 3″ and these black and white beauties had a 4″ heel which made me a bit nervous that I couldn’t walk right.  They actually were mostly white, maybe I should call them white and black heels, but that just doesn’t sound right you know?”

The exact keyword is only in there once, but all the parts of it are scattered in there 3 or 4 times.  As long as you don’t overdo it, Google eats that stuff up.

Then link that from your side bar from your Most Popular Posts list you are going to make and I can pretty safely say that you’ll see traffic for that keyword

Don’t take any of this the wrong way, you are way ahead of the pack already!  You have an aged site with plenty of original content, year old backlinks, and some page rank already.  Make a better focus on your individual product/post pages and remove the link junk and you’ll see a big jump in search engine traffic in the coming months. Add to that a focus on building keyword focused backlinks to your individual money posts (not categories!) and you’ll have a great site for yourself.

Building links manually will take ages and more and still you’re not sure it will help. This is a day by day help for link building so it’s a great service I enjoy using.

I am sick and tired of Google changes the rules every Monday or Thursday just because he wishes, forgetting it was us, the affiliate and the small sites that helped him grow and beat Yahoo…

This is the eternal debate, will a particular link hurt my site.  Here is my take.  This is going to be a loooooooong one, so stick with me please.  It’s worth the read.

Note that I haven’t started using any link building services on this site and a few of my oldest sites just as a precaution, but I am using them on all of my new sites.

Everyone thinks Google is capricious and arbitrary in their decisions on which sites are indexed and ranked and which aren’t.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  Google HATES taking manual action against sites.  It costs them money to have a human review a site, wade through a reconsideration process, etc.  There are TRILLIONS of unique URLs out there.  If their algorithm can’t handle webspam correctly, they lose tons of money manually trying to fix their rankings.

There are certainly varying SHADES of Grey Hats here with these services.  I wrote an article about White Hats vs Grey Hats vs Black Hats a few months ago, check it out to see the definitions I use.  In short, Grey hat means techniques that aren’t illegal in the US (such as spamming email, false testimonials, or unrealistic earnings claims.) but are against the terms of service of a particular company and may get you banned from that companies services such as the Google search results.  If I lose my income stream from a site, I can deal with that.  I DON’T want to go to jail though.

There are also varying SIZES of Grey hats here as well.  Consider the example of JC Penney last year.  They used a football stadium sized Grey Hat last year to increase their search engine rankings though buying MASSIVE numbers of paid links that weren’t even inside content and Google didn’t notice until the New York Times pointed it out to them!

So, how dark is too dark a hat?  And how big is too big?

Don’t forget SEO Rule #1:  If your content doesn’t deserve to be #1 on Google for a given keyword, no amount of links will keep it there long term.  If people click in the search results and wonder if Google screwed up by showing you a terrible spammy page, one or more of them will eventually report it.  You will get a pass on a number of small violations of the Webmaster guidelines if you have darn good content.   A Google Quality Engineer doing a manual check of your site should instantly see that your site probably deserves to rank well for your keywords and they’ll move on.

Note that for 99% of the keywords and niches out there, Google isn’t going to bat an eye if you’ve bought links or paid for article marketing as long as your content is good and deserves to rank well.  If you pick a spammy niche like perscription drugs, gambling, weight loss, making money online, and the like, expect any Grey Hat link building to eventually fail you.  Google keeps a close eye on these subjects.  But for the hundreds of thousands of other niches out there you have to go pretty far over the link building line to get noticed.

Google considers paid links against it’s terms of service.  Why?  Could it be they want you to pay THEM for links, by using Adwords to advertise?  Or that the Google ranking algorithm relies on natural linking to find the best content?  It’s probably a mixture of both really.  These link building services are one small step away from buying links and one small step away from traditional article marketing.

I can go pay Associated Press $500 or PRWeb $200 for a press release that will put my information and links on various sites, which help build backlinks, is paying BuildMyRank honestly that much different?

That all being said, using a link building service is a business risk decision just like any other.  I can pay more in an attempt to hire better employees, I can buy more or less insurance for my inventory, I can buy an existing website in the hopes it will keep it’s Page Rank after the sale, and thousands of other decisions.  You have to weigh the cost vs the benefit vs the risk.

For any new sites I start, the ~$50 cost of one of these services to help it rank and see if the site and keywords are viable and to help garner initial traffic is totally worth it.  Remember that you have to be found for people to backlink to you, and being high up in the search results certainly helps.  The very very small risk of a site being deindexed vs the still very small risk of a site being penalized vs the also small risk of the links just not being counted are outweighed by the results I’ve seen so far by using these services.

Every once in a while I’ll pick a night and rather than creating new content on an existing site or creating a new affiliate site, I’ll go back through my existing sites and check for out of date affiliate offers or links.

Checking every single page is hard considering I have more than 600 pages of hand written content at this point across all my sites, but WordPress provides some simple stats tools that make it easy to see which are the most trafficed pages on each site over a given time period.

Typically I’ll take my 10-20 traffic articles and/or outbound links and check that they are still valid.  I did a quick sweep and cleaned up:

1. The article on this site about free one use credit card numbers was out of date since Paypal discontinued their one time use card program.  I updated it to include another free card that let you generate single use secure card numbers.
2. An Amazon affiliate link on another site that was getting 6-7 hits a day was getting a 404 error from Amazon since they moved the product for some reason.
3. Another article that gets 50-100 views a day on the summer was pointing to a product on a site that had no affiliate program.  Amazon started carrying that product, so I updated it and added some affiliate links.
4. Found another article that gets 20-30 views a day and 2-3 clicks to Amazon a day.  My wife had written it last year and it was missing our affiliate tags.

Honestly, for one hour of work those small tweaks will earn more money than if I had spent 10 hours writing 2-3 good articles.

Always take a quick look back at your old content and make sure it’s still working for you!

Targeting Your Traffic

This is probably the easiest of all the lessons, but is also the most important.  You need to make sure that your content, your readers, and the Amazon links you are getting them to click on actually match up!  For example, click on the following link to Amazon:

Ok, now what did you think?  Did that item interest you?  No?   Well no surprise really, I was pretty sure you wouldn’t like that.

How did I know?  Because this site is about cutting through the BS to earning money online and you are reading an article about making money with Amazon.  I can see what keywords bring people here through search engines and I know what forums and sites send me the most visitors.  None of them are related to that product at all.  I can look at Alexa.com data and Quantcast.com data and see that my largest demographic is largely males aged 25-45 who finished college yet make less than $50k a year.  Followed a close second by males aged 25-45 who didn’t finish college and make over $100k a year.  Odd mix, but I think it’s people looking to make more money in the first case, and already successful internet marketers in the second case.  I’m guessing at least 80% of you aren’t interested in that product.

See?  That is far more targeted product to you, the reader of this article.  It doesn’t even have to be an Amazon product, as long as it’s what you are looking for.   Don’t be afraid to target other products from other vendors other than Amazon if it’s better targeted to your audience.

You can take this one step further with Geo targeting by IP address.  If I knew what country you were coming from, I could show you something different, maybe from Amazon.co.uk, or Amazon.ca.

It seems obvious when you think about it, but if you don’t show people something they are interested in chances are they won’t buy anything!

But I Think I’m Targeting Already!  Why Don’t People Buy?

Now here is the biggest issue with both of those items.  YOU, the person that is currently being targeted by this article, are likely not in a buying mood.  How do I know you aren’t in a buying mood?  This site doesn’t really target any keywords that would indicate you sat down at the computer intending to buy stuff.  I suspect you are trying to MAKE money, not spend it.

You need to catch people shopping to get the biggest bang for the buck out of your Amazon sales.  That way even if they don’t buy the item you are targeting, they might buy something else and you still get credit.

An example?  Here is a short list of “buying” keywords:

• buy
• cheap
• discount
• sale
• coupon
• where to buy online
• best place to buy
• shop
• review

There are many others, but that’s the general idea.  So if you are building a site about sewing machines, you would want to create single pages targeting a buying keyword and your targeted keyword together.  Buy sewing machines, sewing machine sale, where to buy singer sewing machines, sewing machine discount, etc.

With proper targeting and buying keywords tied together, you can get people at your website that are in a mood to buy something already and are looking for information on exactly what to buy.

Amazon Affiliate Lesson #3 – Targeting Your Traffic is a post from: ElectronPlumber

Only slightly on purpose, I’ve added a new spin on the Great Link Building Service Experiment in the past few weeks.  I’ve been neglecting the link building services!  I haven’t actively posted any links to any of the sites in the past 4 weeks.  All the sites stopped receiving new backlinks around April 1st.

Based on the past results and how busy I’ve become lately with my other sites, I decided to kill two birds with one stone.  One, to see what would happen to the rankings if I ignored the sites for a month.  And two, to use all the services to drive links to a review site I created last year that is for a seasonal based product, with sales peaking in mid Summer and then again in early December for the holiday season.  So far I’ve seen a nice rise in keyword rankings for that site.  After the summer I’ll crunch the numbers to see if the months worth of cost and effort was worth it in sales and increased traffic.

That being said, I plan to redirect the links back at these sites starting on May 1st and see what happens.

A bunch of people have asked what the competition looks like for the main keyword I’ve chosen.  Like I’ve said before, on a scale of 1-10 for difficulty, with 10 being most difficult, I’d put my three word keyword at a 4 and the two word version at a 6.  For reference, I would rate the keyword “insurance” a 10 on this scale, “car insurance” a 9, “car insurance quotes” an 8, down to “children’s toy car insurance policy” a 0.  A snapshot from Market Samarui for the three word keyword:

I took this last week when the Build My Rank site was at position 5.  No idea why MS is reporting 5 page links and 11 home page links since I’ve only linked to the home page.  Probably just a bug in their link reporting.

Week 8/9 Link Building Service Results

Oddly enough, after a month of no new links, the Build My Rank site is still moving up and actually turned a profit for the month.  It costs $59 a month, and so far the site has generated $67 in Amazon affiliate commissions for the month of April.  Long term the site is still in the red since I’ve paid for BMR for 3 months running now.  BUT if these rankings stick it could easily become a $500 a month site for me.

And also oddly enough, the Unique Article Wizard site which originally had done nothing is now sitting on Page 2, while the LinkAloha site has dropped to Page 4.  Seems like Profile linking works, but only as long as you keep making the links, while article marketing seems to hold it’s position better when link building drops off.

• Pages Indexed: 9

I’ve given up on my own SEO site.  I’ve decided to keep this site as a sort of scientific control site and make no links to it.  It shows that the other services are working and it’s not just on page optimization that is causing them to rise in the rankings.

• Harder 2 Word Keyword Google Rank:  200+
• Pages Indexed: 7

The UniqueArticleWizard site popped back into the running about a week ago, and even with no new links has not taken much of a hit in the rankings.  Of course, it hasn’t broken page 1 yet either.  While it’s certainly provided a benefit to the rankings here, it’s not enough to make the site any money on it’s own.

• Main 3 Word Keyword Google Rank: 30 (+10)
• Harder 2 Word Keyword Google Rank:  188
• Pages Indexed: 8
• Yahoo reported Backlinks: 76 (-48)

What’s interesting about the 1WayLinks site is that the number of reported backlinks continues to drop week after week since I stopped making new articles, but the ranking hasn’t really been hurt all that much.

• Harder 2 Word Keyword Google Rank:  not in the top 200.
• Pages Indexed: 9
• Yahoo reported Backlinks: 30 (-2)

The LinkAloha site took a decent dip this week.  Apparently if you want low value profile links to help, you need to keep building them week after week.  We’ll see if this service pops back up in future weeks once the links start flowing again.

BuildMyRank Site (.org):

• Main 3 Word Keyword Google Rank: 4 (+1)
• Harder 2 Word Keyword Google Rank:  114
• Pages Indexed: 8
• Yahoo reported Backlinks: 13 (-2)

The BuildMyRank site continues to dominate, even four weeks later with no new links made.  It’s even moved up!  I can’t wait to see if these kind of rankings stick in the coming months, since it will become my go to link building method for any new affiliate site I create.

How to explain it?  I think it has something to do with the high PR sites and they way the posts are distributed and linked.  UAW and 1WayLinks rely on user donated sites for their content distribution, which can be covered on other outlinks and have little or no PageRank.  LinkAloha makes profile links on forums, which will never be linked off a high PR page for any amount of time.  With BuildMyRank,  every post I make spends time on a PR1-5 page, sometimes even with a link to my site on that high PR page.  In addition, they ping and create backlinks for each and every article to make sure it gets indexed.

Whatever it is, it’s working far better than any other service and I like that more than anything else!

Week 8/9 Update – Great Link Building Service Experiment – The Ignoring is a post from: ElectronPlumber

It sounds crazy, but there are times when you can add value and make more money by doing less work.

There are plenty of stories of people turning something worthless into gold using the power of persuasion.    The famous Tom Sawyer lesson where he realizes that he can convince his friends that whitewashing the fence is a privilege and they pay him to take over his job.  The ShamWow commercials that turn a regular old car drying towel into the absorbent miracle of the lifetime.   If you can convince people that something has extra value, they will pay your more for it.

I was in a candy store over the weekend, buying stuff for the kids Easter baskets when I saw a thing of marketing beauty right there on the shelf.  On one side were traditional candy necklaces, the staple portable candy snack for kids and ravers alike, they were $0.50 each.  And right next to them was a box of “Make Your Own Easter Candy Necklace Kits”, where for just $10 you could get 8 necklace kits.  For those who don’t like doing the math in their head, that’s $1.25 each.  See where I’m going here?

Other than the inclusion of a single bunny shaped candy that couldn’t have been worth more than $0.10, they were identical to the regular old pre-made candy necklaces.  Well, identical except you had to buy 8 of them at a time and they cost almost three times as much.

By turning it into a do it yourself kit, some enterprising candy maker figured out what to do with all the broken necklaces from the factory and earn more to boot.

There is a valuable lesson here.  Sometimes you can take a tired old concept, REMOVE something from it, and respin it as a great new thing.  Think about it.

My wife and her friend are starting a website together and had trouble picking out a good domain name.  They had plenty of good ideas but it was hard to come up with the ideal name that was still available.

Between the number of real sites and domain squatters, most of the good keyword targeted domains are taken, so creativity is a must.  But keep it within reason.

They aren’t targeting a particular product or keywords like I would do with a money making website, but they want to write together about a subject that interests them.

Let’s just say for example, their website is going to be about sewing.  Simple domains like sew.com, sewing.com, sewsew.com, sewwhat.com are all long gone.  So how to pick one given the more limited options?

We’re talking here about the first part of the domain.  Don’t worry about the .com or .org or .net part yet.  That’s next time.  Pick a good first part, and see where it leads you.

Domain Name Rules

Keep in mind the following four qualities when choosing a domain name.  Your site should meet at least two of these.   Good luck meeting all four, but if you can you have a winner.

1. Keep It Short – ideally under 8 characters before the .
2. Must Be Relevant – For the sewing example, make sure it tells people this site is going to be about sewing.
3. Make it Memorable – See what I did there?  Make it Memorable, both words start with M, sticks in your head a little.
4. Keyworded – If you want search engines to find you, put keywords people might search for in there.  At least one keyword related to what your site is about.  Sew, sewing, thread, fabric, etc.

How To Check Domain Availability

Simple, type it in below!  Don’t get frustrated if the first few sites you try aren’t available.  Be creative!

Site Naming Examples

bettyandMaryswebsite.com – Fits none of these qualities.  People are always tempted to put their personal names in domain names.  Unless your personal name is a brand or you want it to become a brand, don’t bother.

thebestwebsiteevah.com – Fits none of these qualities.  Too many people pick site names like this.

sewaround.com – Not bad!  It fits #2, #4, and comes close to #1.

sewlow.com – Even better!  Meets pretty much all of them.  Too bad it’s taken.  sewlow.org however is available, as is sew-low.com!

Choosing a Domain Name – Part 1 – Rules For Bloggers #20 is a post from: ElectronPlumber

I’ve been talking about search engine traffic lately, since that is what I am targeting with my niche sites these days.  Grab a good search results position Google for some half-decent keywords and it’s free traffic that keeps coming and coming without having to pay for advertising.

But at the same time, do not forget to use social networks to drive traffic.  Sure, you can go try to attract tons of Twitter followers (who will likely just ignore you) and try to make lots of Facebook friends (who will likely Hide you from their feeds) and so on, but that’s not what I’m talking about here.

Google and other search engines trust social networking sites more than they will likely trust your site!  It’s far easier to get your post on Digg or Propeller or Mixx to rank highly in search results than it is to get a new site to rank that high.

Don’t believe me?  Take a look at this report for the last six months of referral clicks for Electron Plumber:

While it’s important to note that direct referring sites account for less than 15% of the traffic we receive (the rest is direct from search engines), it’s still quite a number of visits and views.

What you should specifically look at though is the Digg and Mixx referrals in there.  Why those two?  Because those are really the only social networks we’ve submitted to.  Well, Propeller (free links) and Reddit a little bit too, but mostly Digg and Mixx.  And not every post either, probably less than half of our posts.

And those aren’t Digg superstar posts either, most have at  2 or 3 Diggs on them tops.  But for certain search queries, Google ranks those links higher than our actual content, sometimes on the first page when the original story isn’t even in the top two pages.

So post those stories!  Don’t be shy.  Plus it’s crazy simple, takes only a couple of minutes to post a story.  Even less if you use an automatic bookmarking tool like Bookmarking Demon to auto post to all the top social bookmarking sites at the same time.

Do it, do it now.

Social Network or Bust! – Rules For Bloggers #19 is a post from: ElectronPlumber

There seems to be a misconception out there that since English is the dominant language on the Internet that one should create and write sites in English. Do not fall into this trap.

If English is your first language, learn to write it correctly.  Go read www.bartleby.com/141/ and www.economist.com/research/styleguide/ for all the rules you need to know.  It is dry, read it anyway.

If English is your second language, do not try to blog in it unless you can write in English at least at a High School level.   If you want to do it for practice, go for it, but make sure you get a good writer to review it and provide feedback and corrections, or you will never improve.  Native English speakers will not respect you at all and will not read your site.  Search Engines will ignore you.

Seriously consider writing in your native language.  You actually have an advantage that many English speakers do not.  You can take an already popular English blog and adapt the idea to your own language.  Not steal the content mind you, but just the site idea.  I can imagine there is no site like www.cakewrecks.com in other languages, but there has to be an equivalent cultural idea out there for China or India or Spain.
