100 Rules For Bloggers #9 – Do Promote Your Blog!

by on December 17, 2008

If you have real compelling content on a real blog or site (not a splog or squeeze page site), you need to promote it in a meaningful way, both to get SER (Search Engine Ranking) and to get actual subscribers and repeat visitors.

There are lots of sites and lists out there of how to effectively promote your blog, but the important points are:

  1. Get dofollow backlinks from everywhere you can.  Backlinks drive SER more than anything else.  So post your site on every social networking site, submit your articles to article submission directories, etc.
  2. Get targeted links to your blog in front of people who will be interested in your content!  Comment on other blogs similar to yours, post your blog in forums where people come to look for information on your topic, answer questions on Answers.com or wikianswers.com.  On one of my sites about 40% of the traffic comes directly from people clicking through backlinks, so even “nofollow” links can bring you traffic.
