The stuff people search for around Thanksgiving

by on November 30, 2008

On the affiliate sites I’m running and the Google/Yahoo ads I’m running, I’ve noticed some trends that I NEVER would have thought of without having seen the data myself.   I would love to get a peek at something like the Amazon daily search trends for certain keywords (damn you googhydr-20!) and crunch the numbers, some amazing insights would pop out.

Anyway, here is what I noticed this week.

Leading up to Thanksgiving, I see a ton of searches for the following.  These aren’t the exact search terms since most of what I see are long tail type searches, but they fall into the following categories:

  1. Cookbooks
  2. Knife Sets
  3. Dish/Pan sets

Now, the day after Thanksgiving, I see the following searches rise to the top

  1. Steam Cleaner vacuums
  2. Knife Sets
  3. Weight loss/diet books

The third one I would have guessed, but the first and second seem a little odd at first.  But then I thought about it some more.

Steam Cleaner vacuums: Everyone in the US just had Thanksgiving dinner and I’d bet at least 10-20% of those dinners had red wine or cranberry sauce ground into the carpet.  How do you get it out?  Buy a steam cleaner!

Knife Sets:  Those people without the forsight to order knife sets before Thanksgiving probably had some sort of knife/carving crisis and told a loved one that they really need new knives as a holiday present.

Think ahead and make some extra affiliate sales next year!
